Tonight, the New York Islanders face a crossroads. They face their rival New York Rangers at the Barclays Center in what very well could be John Tavares’s last home game in the orange and blue.
Tavares has made it very clear over the course of this roller coaster of a season that his goal is to let this entire free agency process work itself out. He is on pace to have a career year, sitting at 36 goals, 47 assists, and 83 points. This makes him a much bigger target to teams in need of a superstar center, because he is known as being able to perform under the pressure of a contract year.
Even though Tavares’s year has certainly helped the team as best as it could, it also gave fans a whole lot of doubt. Combined with the joke of a front office that the Islanders have, Tavares having a big year has caused fans to worry that GM Garth Snow will not be able to re-sign him.
This would be catastrophic to our fan base and team for a very long time. This is why I am here on behalf of Drive 4 Five to ask you this: we would like to start a movement, the Tavares Chant Movement.
At tonight’s game against the Rangers we ask of you, the fans, to please start a loud chant of “John Tavares” starting at the 5:00 minute mark of the third period and to take it all the way until he leaves the ice. We hope that doing this will show our captain how much we appreciate him and hopefully he will realize that he wants to stay here and be our captain for the rest of his career.
