Every Thursday, I will preview the Islanders week ahead. Here is my first Week Preview: 10/11-10/17!
The New York Islanders finished last week with a record of 2-1-0. The Islanders ended the week with a strong 4-0 win against the Sharks in Robin Lehner’s debut with the team.
After defeating the Sharks, the Islanders had a four-day break, which ends today as the team heads to Nashville to play the Predators, a week after the Islanders lost to the Predators in their home opener.
Then, the Islanders have another break when they will travel to Anaheim to play the Ducks.
The Islanders will look to continue their momentum against the Predators and the Ducks.
Players to look forward to:
Robin Lehner-
After it was revealed in an Athletic article that Lehner suffered from mental health issues and was in rehab during the summer, skeptics wondered how Lehner would play.
Well, the book is out. Lehner saved all 35 shots that he saw en route to a shutout. Lehner is the first Islanders’ goaltender to have a shutout in his debut with the Islanders.
Lehner will start today against Nashville. Trotz played the “hot-hand” in giving Thomas Griess the start against the Predators after he played well against the Hurricanes on opening night.
Josh Bailey-
Josh Bailey is tied for the team led in points with four. Bailey, who is being used in the “Ovechkin” spot on the power-play, notched his first goal of the season against Carolina and has had three assists. Bailey has been on the power-play to take one-timers to set up Anders Lee on the rebound, or to score.
Now that teams have seen some tape on the Islanders’ power play, will Bailey get covered more, or will he continue producing points?
Scott Mayfield-
Mayfield was sidelined for the first two games of the season this year. Mayfield, who played on Monday against the Sharks had a goal and 13:56 minutes of ice time, will be expected to continue to produce for the Islanders.
With Devon Toews in Bridgeport, Mayfield is in a fighting spot for his spot in the lineup. Mayfield, who was put into the lineup for Lucas Sbisa, will be sure to get some ice time this week.
