Over a decade has passed since Josh Bailey first stepped onto the frigid ice of Nassau Coliseum. Since that day, he has proved to be an integral piece of the Islanders organization, flourishing into a magnificent player who has remained loyal to the Islanders faithful to this day. As Islanders fans celebrated Bailey’s 800th game last month, vivid memories of the bleak past may swarm their minds.
Luckily for them, it seems with the help of Bailey, the low expectations are rapidly rising.
Drafted ninth overall in the 2008 NHL Draft, Bailey has recorded over 140 goals and accumulated over 400 points in his career. These totals have allowed Bailey to claim sole possession of 14th on the all-time points list for the Islanders. However, by season end, Bailey may be as high as 12th.
Recognized in 2018 for his breakout season, amassing 71 points, he was invited to participate in the NHL All-Star game against some of the best players in the NHL. Recognized in the same light as Connor McDavid or Sidney Crosby serves as a testament to the hardships he went through. Now, as a new season unfolds before our eyes, Bailey looks to be at the forefront of an Islanders offense looking to make strides.
While Bailey’s noteworthy scoring ability has greatly helped the Islanders offense, his dynamic leadership has allowed him to be a key contributor to help mentor younger players. His guidance has allowed some players to feel more comfortable in a stressful environment that is the Nation Hockey League. A calming presence in the locker room is always welcome, but it is a rarity when a skilled player like Bailey can also play the role of a mentor.

Bailey’s on-ice contributions have been phenomenal, but it is his off-ice generosity that has many Islanders fans placing him on a whole other pedestal. Bailey’s Buddies is an outstanding experience where a recovering child each home game gets to enjoy a once in a lifetime experience with their childhood idol. This year marks the 10th season that Bailey has been hosting Bailey’s Buddies, and Bailey finds joy in making new friends and giving tours of the locker room. This opportunity gives fans an enriching experience, making memories they will never forget.
Bailey has done wondrous works for the Islanders fans, organization and community. His charisma with fans has helped transform the culture of a rich and vibrant organization, creating fans for life with his impeccable skills, work habits and outgoing personality. While Josh Bailey may not have too many accolades to his name, he has not won over the fans with his awards, but rather his heart.
