Game of the Month Recap: 1/16/20 Rangers 3-Islanders 2
Heartbreaking is the best way to describe how this game went for the Islanders. A great 2-2 game with under two minutes to go looked like it needed overtime. But a questionable penalty cost the Isles their revenge against their rivals.
The Breakdown
The Isles came out hard, this time dominating the Rangers for the full first period, outshooting them 22-5, but only came out of the period up 1-0. Alexandar Georgiev made some big saves to keep the Rangers in it, otherwise the score could’ve easily been at least 3-0 Isles after the first.
The second period is as typical as it gets for the Isles. After a first period domination, the Isles came out flat for the second period but the Rangers didn’t. The Rangers outshot the Isles 11-0 until about the halfway point of the period when the Isles started to turn it back on again. Mika Zibanejad scored the only goal that period for the Rangers on the power-play.
The third period was a great, back and forth brand of hockey with a lot of action. The Isles failed to score on the power-play early in the third and Tony DeAngelo got out of the box and went down to rip one right over Semyon Varlamov to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead. With just over seven minutes to go in the game, Anthony Beauvillier tied the game up with a lucky bounce off of his skate.
The Heartbreak
With 54 seconds remaining in the game, Derick Brassard took a cross-checking penalty against Jesper Fast (which Fast sold) to give the Rangers, who were 2/4 in the game going into that power-play, another one. Zibanejad fired one on Varlamov and the puck went right to Chris Kreider all alone in the slot and he buried the rebound and the game with 24.6 seconds left.
