It was an extremely entertaining Islanders Rangers game, probably the most entertaining of the year.  There was everything you could’ve possibly asked for in a rivalry game.  This game, failed to disappoint, but the Islanders went home with only one point.
The Game
In the first period, the Islanders put on a show, dominating the Rangers from start to finish, but they managed to give up a goal to Artemi Panarin, off of a beautiful set up.
Greg McKegg tipped one passed Semyon Varlamov to extend the Rangers lead to 2-0 in the second period.  Later in the period, J.G. Pageau tapped in a fortunate bounce, to get his first goal as an Islander and to cut the defecit to 2-1.
The third period was quite eventful.  Michael Dal-Colle was taken out of the game after getting leveled by Jacob Trouba following a ‘buddy pass’ from Pageau.
Pageau stepped in immediately, dropping the gloves with Trouba, which resulted in 17 penalty minutes for Pageau and he was tossed.  Shortly after, Brett Howden tipped home a shot from the point to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead with 10 minutes to go.  As we’ve seen all season, the Isles never quit.

A few minutes after the Howden goal, the Isles thought they have scored to cut the Ranger lead to 3-2.  But that wasn’t the case.  The referee immediately called no goal, because Anders Lee was in the crease, interfering with Alexander Georgiev.
After video review, Lee was clearly pushed into Georgiev, but the call stood. However, the Isles stayed resilient.  Jordan Eberle made it a 3-2 game with just over five minutes to go.
With an empty net and under a minute to go, the Isles puled off their late-game heroics as Brock Nelson buried one with 16 seconds remaining to tie the game at 3 and sent it to overtime.
Overtime was a huge let-down, and it seems to be a pattern throughout this season.  Score the tying goal late, and then give up an early goal in overtime.
Anthony Beauvillier turned the puck over at the blue-line, which resulted in a chase down on Artemi Panarin.  All three Islanders players went to Panarin, leaving Zibanejad wide open and he cranked one passed Varlamov to win the game just 28 seconds in.
