In the Islanders’ 561-player history, 84 of the possible 99 numbers have graced the blue and orange. This article marks the halfway point in our journey to find the best to wear each number on Long Island. Included in this list is five goaltenders and a number worn by one of them that will never be worn again. 39: Rick DiPietro 2003-13

The first overall pick in 2000 played a long time with the Islanders with mixed results. After switching from 1 to 39 prior to his third season, DiPietro became a workhorse. He played in 50 games in 2003-04 and then 60+ each of the next three seasons, gaining Vezina votes in 2006-07. Sadly, his career was derailed by a hip injury that supposedly happened during the 2008 All-Star Weekend. He only made 45 starts throughout the next five seasons before fizzling out of the NHL.

38: Dave Scatchard 1999-04

After coming over in the trade that sent Flix Potvin to Vancouver, Scatchard played four more full, underrated seasons on Long Island. He put up 81 goals and 168 points in 347 games while receiving Selke votes in two seasons. He also appeared in three playoff series, notching four points in 17 games.

37: Mark Parrish 2000-06

The big return piece in the Roberto Luongo trade, Parrish was a consistent producer for much of his time on Long Island. He scored 20+ goals five times, including in 57 games before he was traded to Los Angeles. Overall, he put up 118 goals and 214 points in 345 games with the Islanders as a face of their early-2000s teams.

36: Gary Nylund 1988-93

The former third-overall pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs concluded his 11-year career in New York. Nylund appeared in 211 games over four-and-a-half seasons with the Islanders grabbing 63 points. He was let go after the 1992-93 season at age 29 and never saw NHL ice again.

35: Tommy Salo 1995-99

A former fifth-round pick, Salo began his career slowly with New York. After making 16 appearances over his first two seasons, he was given the reins, playing in 120 games over the next two. Salo made 54 appearances in the 1998-99 season for the Islanders before being traded to Edmonton for Mats Lindgren and an eighth round pick that became Radek Martinek. Overall, Salo went 64-94-21 with the Islanders, amassing a 2.77 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage.

34: Wade Dubielewicz 2004-08

Despite making just 37 appearances over four seasons, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers legend has one of the greatest moments in the 21st century. Dubielewicz went 4-0-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average and a ridiculous .934 save percentage in April to lead the Islanders to the playoffs. The run was capped off by a poke check of New Jersey’s Sergei Brylin to seal a 3-2 shootout win on the final day of the regular season, sending the Islanders to the playoffs.

33: Eric Cairns 1999-04

Big, tough Eric Cairns spent six seasons on Long Island, playing in 327 games and amassing 814 penalty minutes. He got into 59 regular season fights and two playoff fights as well. Cairns was a big presence on the Islanders’ blue line from when he was claimed on waivers from the Rangers in 1999 until he left for Florida as a free agent in 2004.

32: Brendan Witt 2006-10

Speaking of tough defensemen, Brendan Witt spent the final four seasons of his NHL career on Long Island. He got into 12 fights over 247 games with the Islanders, amassing 327 penalty minutes. He also contributed 35 points.

31: Billy Smith 1973-89

Hockey Hall of Famer and dynasty backstop Billy Smith is the only Islander to ever wear 31. With his jersey in the rafters, it looks like it will stay that way. Smith played all but five of his 679 career NHL games on Long Island after being claimed in the expansion draft from Los Angeles. He won the Vezina Trophy in 1981-82 and the Jennings and Conn Smythe trophies the next season. He was even the first goaltender in NHL history to be credited with a goal, doing so on Nov. 28, 1979 against the Colorado Rockies. Smith’s legend lives on as one of the greatest goalies in Islanders’ history.

30: Kelly Hrudey 1983-89

The goaltender who was in tandem with Smith through the mid-to-late 1980s, Hrudey appeared in 241 games with the Islanders, winning 106 of them. He received Vezina votes in four of the six seasons he wore blue and orange, including the year he was traded to Los Angeles in a deal that brought Mark Fitzpatrick to Long Island.
