Reverse Retro Jerseys: Metropolitan Division
Adidas has finally released the NHL Reverse Retro jerseys. Each team has gotten a modern styled throwback jersey to be worn a few times this coming season. This will be part one of a four part series, going division by division, where the Drive4Five team will review each teams jersey. We have also scored each jersey out of 10. Today we will be giving our thoughts on each reverse retro jersey in the Metropolitan Division.
New York Islanders: (5.75/10)
The Islanders kept it simple with their reverse retro. Lou Lamiorello doesn’t like to be flashy and you can tell the Islanders were very conservative here. Although they are modeled after the ’80s dynasty, these are simply replicas of the Islanders jerseys from 1998-2007. A simple shoulder patch would of been a nice touch to this jersey.
“I like the colors and knowing Lou Lamoriello likes to keep things simple, I think it’s a perfect jersey. It would have been cool to see an orange jersey though,” said contributer Lexi Panagatos.
I don’t know why people hate these jerseys. Lou Lamoriello isn’t a flashy guy and yes the Islanders missed an opportunity but I think this jersey is simple and clean. pic.twitter.com/a0JCRQHwZE

Matthew Page stated that “It isn’t a bad look, but it can be viewed as a missed opportunity. It represents a fine era, but it is basically their home jersey.”
Many fans did want to see a bold and exciting jersey, like the fisherman or something orange. There isn’t much to say about these, as they are similar to the Islanders current set, with minor changes.
New York Rangers: (6.75/10)
Ranger Fans rejoice! The lady liberty jersey has finally been brought back, but looks much simpler this time. They made the stripes much thinner, instead of going all the way down the sleeve. The team agreed that the logo is incredible but the striping has made this jersey too bland and plain.
“The Lady Liberty logo is great, but the solid navy on the entire jersey looks a bit out of place” was Jake Blackmore’s perspective.
Fans wanting to poke fun on the simplicity of this have called it a practice jersey.
New Jersey Devils: (8/10)
The New Jersey Devils went full Christmas for their retro jersey.
Christian Gardecki said: “I love the idea. It’s truly a reverse retro. This is just an awesome look and the colors compliment each other well.”
It truly is a Metropolitan Division reverse retro jersey as it took an old classic and switched the colors around. The Devils current alternate is a white variation of the green/red combination. They nailed this jersey.
Pittsburgh Penguins: (7.5/10)
The Penguins reverse retro jersey includes vertical font saying “Pittsburgh” across the font. This is a jersey that is simple but pops. The black and gold always go well together and there is no exception here.
Many hockey fans like Matthew Page, however, wanted to see the robo-penguin: “The jersey is fairly simple and effective, but the Penguins could have done more here. The Robot Penguin would’ve made things more interesting.”
Although some people wanted to see a things play out a little bit differently, Pittsburgh still provided us a great retro uniform.
Philadelphia Flyers: (7.6/10)
The Flyers reverse retro is somewhat similar to what they wear currently. They have obviously “reversed” the colors around from a jersey they wore in the ’90s.
These look really good, and Will Wiegelman agrees “These are better than their current set. I hated these jerseys when they were black but the reverse is phenomenal.”
This look perfectly combines their past jersey history with their current set. Philly got it right.
Washington Capitals: (9.75/10)
Wow. Just wow. The Capitals are the winner for the Metropolitan Division reverse retro jerseys. The screaming eagle has always been an incredible logo, but the Capitals old color scheme held it back from greatness. Adding the current red, white and blue color scheme to these jerseys is a thing of beauty. The shoulder patches are great as well.
“The logo was needed to be brought back in red white and blue. 10/10. Beautiful” is how Ben Kule put it.
The whole Drive4Five staff loves this jersey, and it is going to be even more amazing when we get to see it on the ice.
Carolina Hurricanes: (8.75/10)
The Hurricanes really went retro to go back to their past history as the Hartford Whalers. The Canes introduced a green Hartford alternate in 2018-19, and have now added this gray one to their current set.
“I didn’t think they would go grey but it works really well. It does seem, however, that Carolina does not care about its history after the move” is what Will Wiegelman thinks about this jersey.
This is very true that the Hurricanes aren’t interested with their Carolina history. Something to note though is that their jerseys have barely changed. The Whalers logo is fantastic, and loved by many fans, but the Canes are most likely using this as a marketing tool. Nevertheless, this Whalers jersey looks awesome.
Columbus Blue Jackets: (5.12/10)
The Columbus Blue Jackets reverse retro jerseys are quite interesting. Some people love them. But some people hate them.
The logo is okay but simply put, this jersey is way too complicated. Obviously it is reversed, but the Blue Jackets have never had a mainly red jersey. It doesn’t seem right and seems like a Capitals jersey.
There is too much white on the shoulders and sleeves, and overall the jersey doesn’t mesh together. Red is a good accent color for Columbus, but shouldn’t be a main jersey color for them.
Ben Baruch perfectly described it as “I would like to see more blue. Too much white.” Columbus should have been a bit more conservative here, like the Islanders did.
