Reverse Retro Jerseys: Atlantic Division

Adidas has finally released the NHL Reverse Retro jerseys. Each team has gotten a modern styled throwback jersey to be worn a few times this coming season. This will be part two of a four part series, going division by division, where the Drive4Five team will review each teams jersey. We have also scored each jersey out of 10. Last week we reviewed the Metropolitan Division. Today we will be giving our thoughts on each Atlantic Division reverse retro jersey.

Boston Bruins: (8.1/10)

We’ll start off with the Boston Bruins, who went with gold as their main jersey color. Its a great look and a perfect alternate for the Bruins set which already includes 2 black jerseys. This is the first time the Bruins have worn gold since the 2010 Winter Classic. The more basic logo adds a nice touch to tie it all together.Boston did a pretty decent job here. While the jersey is nothing overly special, it is simple and clean. “Bringing back the old “B” is a nice touch. Not a fan of the bear on the shoulders. However, this is a solid look overall that brings back some history” is how Shawn D’Aversa perfectly described it.

Toronto Maple Leafs: (4/10)

This jersey is okay, even with the low ranking. It is hard for a team like the Maple Leafs to “reverse” a jersey due to the fact they only use blue and white. Christian Gardecki stated, “It’s not the best, I like the idea but there was a lot of other choices the Leafs could’ve done.” This is totally true, as the logo is very large and the same color as the jersey. The long white sleeves are very interesting.

Montreal Canadiens: (9.1/10)

“Le Canadien finally have their third jersey!! It’s exactly what the fans have been asking for (it looks almost exactly like the mockups) and looks good.” It’s safe to say Jake Blackmore is excited about the Habs reverse retro. Montreal kept it simple just by switching the colors around. The jersey is a solid blue with a red stripe across the middle, of course with the famous Habs logo on the front. The Montreal Canadiens have a very rich history and we are excited to see this beautiful jersey on the ice.

Buffalo Sabres: (7.7/10)

The Sabres went with an interesting choice here. They have had many different retro jerseys in the past including the goat head and banana slug. They went with this remake of their 2000-01 third jerseys. The thing that these do best is use their current beautiful royal and gold color-way, instead of the red, black and gray of the past. “This jersey is so simple yet so clean. The Sabres logo is nice, the brighter blue and yellow is awesome, and the Buffalo on the bottom stripe is a nice touch” said Shawn D’Aversa. Good job Buffalo.

Ottawa Senators: (7.2/10)

The Senators kept with the same theme they have this offseason when releasing this new uniform. It’s basically just a red edition of their new home jersey, which was recently released. The red is brighter and provides a more vibrant look. The numbers are very large and look a bit odd. Ben Kule explained, “They are a great way to accent their new home and aways, they really needed a red jersey and this does the trick.” Ottawa had red as their main jersey color for a decent amount of time, and this sweater will keep the red coming, but as an alternate jersey.

Florida Panthers: (8.4/10)

The Florida Panthers knocked this one out of the park. The leaping panther logo is amazing and so much better than the current shield style logo they use. The navy is perfect for an alternate, and the tan accents the red and white stripes perfectly. The palm tree patch makes its return on the red/tan shoulders. The drive4five contributors love this jersey, but Ben Baruch believes many people underrate it: “Maybe one of the more underrated RRs. I love these colors and I was always a fan of the old logo.” Florida’s reverse retro is one of the best in the league.

Tampa Bay Lightning: (7.4/10)

The current Stanley Cup Champs got their inspiration from their previous championship, in 2004. The Lightning wore these uniforms in black but obviously reversed to blue. In recent years Tampa Bay has moved on from black being a part of their color scheme but here it looks great. Black accents adds more character to the jersey and makes it look better overall. The retro logo is a pretty cool look as well. David Lazar had this to say about the colors and stripes: “The victory stripes are back. The logo is creative and the blue and white are nice.” Will Wiegelman added this about the logo: “I don’t know why the Lightning don’t still use this logo but this jersey looks very sharp.” The state of Florida definitely did an outstanding job with reverse retro jerseys. Tampa Bay’s look awesome.

Detroit Red Wings: (1.5/10)

Not really much to say here. Yes, Detroit has barely changed their uniforms over the course of their long history. There was just so much potential to put a spin on a past winter classic jersey. Here we just have a plain white jersey with silver stripes. It looks like a practice jersey and is by far the leagues worst. “WAY too simple. This isn’t reverse or retro. Not sure what they were throwing back to” is what Ben Baruch had to say. It is safe to say the Drive4Five team didn’t like this sweater, as Lexi Panagatos said “Its absolutely horrible. Looks like a practice jersey” when describing it. We know its been a tough year for Wings fans, and this certainly didn’t make it any better. The worst Atlantic Division reverse retro goes to Detroit.
