NHL Top 100 Prospects: Who is Number 1?

The present-day NHL features some of the best that the league has ever seen-Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, and Connor McDavid, to name a few. The future of the NHL lies in the hand of the team’s prospect pools. In this article, I ranked my top 100 prospects in the NHL.

To be considered for this list, a player could not have surpassed rookie eligibility, which, defined by the NHL, states that if a player played 25 games in a single season, six or more in two different seasons, or they are over the age of 26, they are considered a rookie, not a prospect.

1. LW Alexis Lafreniere, New York Rangers

Drafted 1st Overall by Rangers in 2020

Last Season Stats for Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL): 35G, 77A, 112P, 52GP

The most recent first overall pick had the highest scoring QMJHL season since 2016. When he isn’t putting in the net himself, he’s finding his teammates to do so. He may not be a top scorer in the league right away, but he will be eventually.

2. C Quinton Byfield, Los Angeles Kings

Drafted 2nd Overall by Kings in 2020

Last Season Stats for Sudbury Wolves (OHL):  32G, 50A, 82P, 45GP

Byfield was on a disappointing Sudbury Wolves team and took them to a playoff berth before the remainder of the regular season and playoffs were canceled. He’s a big, smart two-way player, that is the type of model player every team wants. He did not start the season in the NHL, but will not be in the minors for long.

3. LW Kirill Kaprizov, Minnesota Wild

Drafted 135th Overall by Wild in 2015

Last Season Stats for CSKA Moskow (KHL): 33G, 29A, 62P, 57GP

Don’t let his fifth-round draft selection fool you, Kaprizov has lit up the KHL since his breakout 2017 season, Kaprizov is now 23, and has an age advantage on other rookies so has a very good chance to take home the Calder Trophy.

4. C Trevor Zegras, Anaheim Ducks

Drafted 9th Overall by Ducks in 2019

Last Season Stats for Boston University (NCAA): 11G, 25A, 36P, 33GP

With 18 points in seven games, Zegras led the 2021 World Juniors in points, and the United States won gold. Zegras is flashy and can do it all. The Ducks are aching for an offensive powerhouse, and Zegras could be the answer. Like his in-state rival Byfield, he did not start the season in the NHL but won’t be in the minors for long.

5. LW Tim Stutzle, Ottawa Senators

Drafted 3rd Overall by Senators in 2020

Last Season Stats for Adler Mannheim (DEL): 7G, 27A, 34P, 41GP

While some mock drafts had Tim Stutzle over Quinton Byfield, he fell into the Senators’ lap at number three. The German sensation had the most points of anyone 24 or younger at age 17. He also was fourth in points in the World Juniors and led a depleted Team Germany.

6. D Bowen Byram, Colorado Avalanche

Drafted 4th Overall by Avalanche in 2019

Last Season Stats for Vancouver Giants (WHL): 14G, 38A, 52P. 50GP

One of the top scorers of defenseman in the WHL, Byram’s two-way game was almost unbeatable. His mixture of scoring and defensive attributes gives him a John Carlson-like play and is likely to have a long, successful, NHL career.

7. C Marco Rossi, Minnesota Wild

Drafted 9th Overall by WIld in 2020

Last Season Stats for Ottawa 67’s (OHL): 39G, 81A, 120P, 56GP

Falling to ninth in the draft, Rossi has been viewed as one of the best picks of the draft. Rossi had a whopping 120 points, which lead the OHL, was the 111th highest scoring in OHL history, and the second-highest point total of any Austrian. He is not going to play this season, as, due to complications with Coronavirus, doctors told him to fly back to Austria and rest for the season, preparing to come back healthy next year.

8. C Alex Turcotte, Los Angeles Kings

Drafted 5th Overall by Kings in 2019

Last Season Stats for the University of Wisconsin (NCAA): 9G, 17A, 26P, 29GP

In Turcotte’s amazing 2019 USHL season he scored over two points a game and got drafted fifth overall because of it. Since being drafted, Turcotte showed his worth in the NCAA and is starting the season in the AHL with Byfield.

9. RW  Lucas Raymond, Detroit Red Wings

Drafted 4th Overall by Red Wings in 2020.

Last Season Stats for Frolunda HC (SHL): 4G, 6A, 10P. 33GP

Raymond’s stats may be low because of his role in Sweden, but when watching Raymond play, you can see how good he is. Selecting Raymond with the fourth pick may seem a little high, but Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman loves drafting Europeans. Raymond will be a strong asset to the Red Wings future, with the potential of playing with players such as Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, and Tyler Bertuzzi.

10. C Cole Perfetti, Winnipeg Jets

Drafted 10th Overall by Jets in 2020

Last Season Stats for Saginaw Spirit (OHL): 37G, 74A, 111P, 61GP

Cole Perfetti looks to be the center the Jets need. Just behind Rossi, Perfetti finished second in points with less starpower around him. Perfetti falling into the Jets lap seems to have been the perfect scenario for both the team and the playmaking center.

11. LW Alexander Holtz, New Jersey Devils

Drafted 7th Overall by Devils in 2020

Last Season Stats for Djurgardens IF (SHL): 9G, 7A, 16P, 35GP

Holtz is a goal-scoring fanatic and one of the hottest young stars of the SHL. With his future linemates possibly being Jack Hughes or Nico Hischier, he will have a strong playmaker next to him for years.

12. Dylan Cozens, Buffalo Sabres

Drafted 7th Overall by Sabres in 2019

Last Season Stats for Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL): 38G, 47A, 85P, 51GPCozens was second in points in the World Juniors with 16 through seven games, and was given captain after Kirby Dach’s injury. He’s making a jump straight from the WHL to NHL this year.

13. G Ilya Sorokin, New York Islanders

Drafted 78th Overall by Islanders in 2014

Last Season Stats for CSKA Moscow (KHL): 1.50 GAA, 0.937 SV%, 26-10-3, 9 SO

Widely regarded to as the best non-NHL goalie in the world, “The White Whale” is the future of Islanders goaltending, and could be one of the best ever in the crease for the Islanders.

14. LW Cole Caufield, Montreal Canadiens

Drafted 15th Overall by Canadiens in 2019

Last Season Stats for the University of Wisconsin (NCAA): 19G, 17A, 36P, 36GP

Caufield has been one of the best players in the league in both the USHL and NCAA and showed flashes of greatness in the World Juniors with an outstanding performance.

15. D Jamie Drysdale, Anaheim Ducks

Drafted 6th Overall by Ducks in 2020

Last Season Stats for Erie Otters (OHL): 9G, 38A, 47P, 49GP

One of the best defensemen in the OHL last season, Drysdale looks to provide stability to a Ducks defense that has had a tough time preventing goals in front of one of the league’s best goaltenders in John Gibson.

16. Igor Shesterkin, New York Rangers

Drafted 118th Overall by Rangers in 2014

Last Season Stats for Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL): 1.90 GAA, 0.934 SV%, 17-4-3, 3 SO

Just behind Sorokin but could easily be above him, Shesterkin was a top AHL goalie and had a strong 2019-20 season, giving him the green light to start right away for the Rangers.

17. Nick Robertson, Toronto Maple Leafs

Drafted 53rd Overall by Maple Leafs in 2019

Last Season Stats for Peterborough Petes (OHL): 55G, 31A, 86P, 46GP

The OHL’s goal-scoring leader looks to only give more firepower to a strong Maple Leafs’ offense.

18. RW Arthur Kaliyev, Los Angeles Kings

Last Season Stats for Hamilton Bulldogs (OHL): 44G, 54A, 98P, 57GP

Arthur Kaliyev can do it all, he can find open teammates, and loves to bet on himself with his snapshot. Last night, Kaliyev scored his first NHL goal, the first of many in his bright future.

19. C Alex Newhook, Colorado Avalanche

Drafted 16th Overall by Avalanche in 2019

Last Season Stats for Boston College (NCAA): 19G, 23A, 42P, 34GP

20. D Alex Romanov, Montreal Canadiens

Drafted 38th Overall by Canadiens in 2018

Last Season Stats for CSKA Moscow (KHL): 0G, 7A, 7P, 43GP

Romanov, like Sorokin, Sheshterkin, and Kaprizov, is some of the league’s most hyped-up prospects after dominating the KHL for years. He starts breakouts well and will serve as a great secondary piece to Shea Weber and Jeff Petry for years to come.

21. G Yaroslav Askarov – Nashville Predators

Drafted 11th Overall by Predators in 2020

Last Season Stats for SKA-Neva St. Petersburg (VHL): 2.45 GAA, 0.920 SV%, 12-3-3, 1 SO

Right on the level of Sorokin and Shesterkin, the Preds drafted Askarov, not expecting him to be in the NHL in the next few years, but when he does come over, they expect him to be their starting goaltender.

22. D Jake Sanderson, Ottawa Senators

Drafted 5th Overall by Senators in 2020

Last Season Stats for United States U18 (USHL): 7G, 22A, 29P, 47GP

23. C Anton Lundell, Florida Panthers

Drafted 12th Overall by Panthers in 2020

Last Season Stats for HIFK (SM-Liiga): 10G, 18A, 28P, 44GP

24. RW Grigori Denisenko, Florida Panthers

Drafted 15th Overall by Panthers in 2018

Last Season Stats for Yaroslavl Lokomotiv (KHL): 6G, 6A, 12P, 38GP

Denisenko, another one of the KHL phenoms that have been hyped up ahead of coming over to North America, is a phenomenal skater and puck-mover and could be higher on this list with an increased effort on the defensive side of the game.

25. D Cam York, Philadelphia Flyers

Drafted 14th Overall by Flyers in 2019

Last Season Stats for the University of Michigan (NCAA): 5G, 11A, 16P, 30GP

Drafted 13th Overall by Panthers in 2019

Last Season Stats for Boston College (NCAA): 1.97 GAA, 0.931 SV%, 23-8-2, 5 SO

Team USA’s starting goaltender from the World Juniors is big, can see through traffic, but can work on his consistency to become a top NHL goalie.

27. LW Matt Boldy, Minnesota Wild

Drafted 11th Overall by Wild in 2019

Last Season Stats for Boston College (NCAA): 9G, 17A, 26P, 34GP

Boldy has only looked better since being drafted, and his stickhandling and one-on-one skills show lots of NHL potential.

28. RW Jack Quinn, Buffalo Sabres

Drafted 8th Overall by Sabres in 2020

Last Season Stats for Ottawa 67’s (OHL): 52G, 37A, 89P, 62GP

29. C Connor McMichael, Washington Capitals

Drafted 25th Overall by Capitals in 2019

Drafted 22nd Overall by Rangers in 2018

Last Season Stats for the University of Wisconsin (NCAA): 7G, 11A, 18P, 36GP
