Islanders Defense Takes Over in Victory Against Sabres
The New York Islanders made easy work of their division rivals, the Buffalo Sabres, in tonight’s game, winning 3-1. The Islanders offense clicked tonight, and their defense stepped up and contained Buffalo to just one goal.
Islanders Game Analysis
First Period
The first period was pretty even for the most part, until the waning minutes, when the Islanders scored twice.
The first goal came from the captain, Anders Lee, who scored his fifth of the season off of an assist from Josh Bailey. The second goal came from Jean-Gabriel Pageau, who registered his fifth of the season off an assist from Nick Leddy. The Islanders led 2-0 heading into the second period.
In the first period, Semyon Varlamov picked up 12 saves for the Islanders, and Linus Ullmark racked up six for the Sabres.
Second Period
The second period was pretty even on both sides of the ice; the defensive effort shined for both teams. Buffalo scored early on off of a power-play goal from Victor Olofsson, preventing the shutout.
In the middle of the second period, Brock Nelson scored a power-play goal. Varlamov racked up eight saves, and Ullmark matched him with eight saves of his own. Islanders led 3-1 going into the final period.
Third Period
In the third period, the Islanders played lights out hockey. They did not allow a single shot on goal by the Sabres all period. Their defense played outstanding during this game, and its effort was highlighted in this period. Not only did they keep the Sabres off of the scoresheet, but they also kept them away from high-danger opportunities.
Islanders Takeaways
The Islanders played an incredible game on both ends of the ice tonight. Pageau remained dominant, scoring his fourth goal in his last three games. He is heating up at the right time and should be a very valuable part of their team going forward.
Islanders star Mathew Barzal extended his point streak to nine games with an assist tonight. Barzal remains one of the top stars and is a very integral part of the team.
