Kieffer Bellows Penguins Pity to Devils Domination
2016 first-round draft pick Kieffer Bellows was criticized for his play on Feb. 18 in a 4-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Bellows was -2 on the game, and head coach Barry Trotz bluntly discussed his frustration. Trotz publicly criticized the rookie, talking about how other rookies have gone into the lineup and have done a good job, while Bellows has not. Trotz asserted that Bellows missed his opportunity.
Much of the veteran players in the lineup lack the younger players’ skill and talent. Trotz has been notorious for being more lenient with veteran players. So, it was not much of a surprise that Trotz harshly criticized Bellows’ mediocre play.
March 13 was Bellows’ first time back into the lineup since the 4-1 loss against the Penguins. And, Bellows’ absence in the lineup most likely would have continued if it was not for Islanders’ captain Anders Lee getting injured.
Moreover, Bellows responded grandly, proving he belongs in the lineup by scoring two goals, including the game-winner. A night later, he scored another one.
These two goals against the Devils were Bellows’ first and second of the season. His first goal was a beautiful snapshot, highlighting why a goal scorer like himself should be in the lineup. His second goal showed his NHL readiness, where he used his strength to drive down the boards into the Devils’ zone. He powered to the net to beat goalie, MacKenzie Blackwood.
Bellows’ two goals helped the Islanders extend their win streak to eight and their point streak to 11 games.
If Kieffer Bellows can continue to build up his confidence, the rest of the NHL should be very worried. And Barry Trotz will be one happy man.
