Kyle Palmieri Is Staying on Long Island
The New York Islanders and forward Kyle Palmieri have agreed to terms on a four-year deal at an average annual value of $5 million. When Islanders General Manager Lou Lamoriello acquired Palmieri at the trade deadline last season, fans didn’t expect to have him back for this upcoming season due to the Islanders’ cap situation. After an offseason where the Islanders traded Andrew Ladd and Nick Leddy, and lost Jordan Eberle to the Seattle Kraken, Lou made it work and Palmieri has officially re-signed.
Palmieri was traded to the Islanders by the New Jersey Devils with forward Travis Zajac on April 7th, 2021, and it took the thirty-year-old some time to get adjusted to the Islanders system. He scored two goals and added two assists in a tough 17-game stretch to end the regular season. In the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs, it was a different story. Palmieri scored seven times and ended with nine points in the Islanders’ 19-game run to the Stanley Cup Semifinals.
Since Jordan Eberle was selected by the Seattle Kraken in the expansion draft, the Islanders are missing a top-line winger to play alongside Mathew Barzal and Anders Lee, who is returning to the lineup following a devastating ACL injury that kept him out from the second week of March through the end of the playoffs. Kyle Palmieri can fill that role and play alongside Barzal and Lee if needed.
It was rumored that the Islanders re-signed Kyle Palmieri earlier on in the offseason, but the Islanders officially announced it yesterday. The Smithtown, New York native, is staying on the Island.
