The Islanders Sign Zdeno Chara to a One-Year Deal

Islanders fans on social media have inquired about Lou Lamoriello’s search for Nick Leddy’s replacement for nearly the entirety of the off-season. However, it appears that the search is over. On Saturday morning, the Islanders signed defenseman Zdeno Chara to a one-year deal (terms TBA).

Chara is an interesting replacement for Leddy because the two players contribute to the team in vastly different fashions. For starters, Leddy, 30, is only 6’0” and 194 lbs, while Chara, 44, is 6’9” and 250 lbs. When it comes to their on-ice impact, Leddy is one of the most offensive-minded defensemen in the NHL, while Chara is far more defensive-minded.

Even at 44, Chara is still a somewhat productive NHL defenseman. Last year with the Washington Capitals, he registered two goals and eight assists within a 55-game period. He posted a plus-minus rating of +5 and showed his physical presence with 44 penalty minutes.

Although Chara undoubtedly will be in the Hall of Fame some day, but he is not the player he was several years ago. That said, he could provide value by mentoring a young player such as Noah Dobson. After the Boston Bruins placed Chara on a line with young defenseman Charlie McAvoy, McAvoy became one of the best defensemen in the NHL. It is difficult to quantify the value of learning from one of the most experienced players ever to play.

Chara also adds playoff experience to a team that desperately could use it. Two seasons ago, the Islanders were two games away from reaching the Stanley Cup Finals. Last season, they were only one game away from such destination. As they look to take the next step, they will rely heavily on Chara’s wisdom and leadership.

At last, Chara might end his career where he started, with the New York Islanders. Hopefully, his presence is the missing piece to the puzzle.
