Islanders Training Camp First Day Summary

Hockey season is almost here! The Islanders opened up on-ice workouts at training camp Thursday, meaning opening night is just around the corner.

There were some storylines from the first day of camp. Captain Anders Lee was back on the ice. Barry Trotz started newcomer Zdeno Chara on Noah Dobson’s left-side. And Bode Wilde had some vaccination drama.

Islanders Training Camp Roster

The Islanders released their training camp roster Thursday.

Young defenseman Bode Wilde was absent from the team. He declined to get the COVID-19 vaccine after Lou Lamoriello required all players in the organization to be vaccinated. He will likely play overseas this year.

“Everyone in our organization, that is staff, coaches and players, are vaccinated,” Lamoriello said Tuesday. “We will not allow any player in our organization to participate unless they’re vaccinated.”

Goaltender Jon Gillies is a newcomer. Coming from a hockey background, his grandfather, Bruce Gillies Sr., played at Norwich University and his father, Bruce Gillies, won the Turner Cup with Muskegon of the United States Hockey League in 1985-86. The 27-year-old was selected by the Calgary Flames in the third round (No. 75) of the 2012 NHL Draft. In 12 career NHL games, he is 4-5-1 with a 2.71 goals against average and a .903 save percentage. He appeared in five games for the Utica Comets of the AHL last year and could help the Bridgeport Islanders at the AHL level this season.
