New York Islanders 2021-22 Season Point Projections

The New York Islanders have had a difficult 2021-22 season. They are 5-10-2 – good for last in the Metropolitan Division, 15th in the Eastern Conference and 30th in the NHL. The Islanders came into the year as Stanley Cup contenders, but now, they might not even make the playoffs. With 65 games left for the team in the 2021-22 season, let’s use past campaigns to see what the Isles need to do to stay alive.

2o20-21 Season

Last year, the Islanders finished fourth in the MassMutual East Division with a 32-17-7 record. With a .634 point percentage (P%), the Isles comfortably made the playoffs in a shortened slate.

For the Islanders to finish with a .634 P% this season, they will need to go 45-18-2 in their final 65 games. That would give them 104 points, slightly over the 103.976 pace from last year’s 56-game season.

2019-20 Season

Two years ago, the Islanders finished fifth in the Metropolitan Division with a 35-23-10 record. With a .588 P%, the Islanders had an up-and-down campaign before the season was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the Islanders to finish with a .588 P% this season, they will need to go 40-21-4 in their final 65 games. That would give them 96 points, slightly under the 96.432 pace they were on as of March 11, 2020.

2018-19 Season

Three years ago, the Islanders finished second in the Metropolitan Division with a 48-27-7 record. With a .628 P%, the Islanders proved people wrong in Barry Trotz’s first season as head coach.

For the Islanders to finish with a .628 P% this season, they will need to go 43-17-5 in their final 65 games. That would give them 103 points, which would be equal to their magical 2018-19 run.

Conclusion

The Islanders have some work to do in the 2021-22 season if they want to make the playoffs. They will need to play some stellar hockey – much over .500 – to even come close to the postseason or their record from years prior. However, if there is one thing the Islanders have shown the last three seasons, it is never to doubt them.
