The Islanders Should Keep Identity Line Together

The New York Islanders should keep their fourth line, also known as “The Identity Line,” together this offseason.

Casey Cizikas and Matt Martin will be with the Islanders for years to come. Cizikas inked a six-year extension in the offseason and Matt Martin is playing in the second year of his four-year deal.

But what about Cal Clutterbuck? The 34-year old is playing in his ninth year with the Islanders, but will become an unrestricted free agent after the season. If the Islanders want to keep their fourth line together, that will require a new contract for their veteran forward.

The Islanders’ identity line is known for their hard-nosed and gritty style of play. Cal Clutterbuck — who was acquired by the Islanders in a trade with the Minnesota Wild on July 1, 2013 — has been a big part of this line (Photo courtesy of Kathy Willens/AP Photo).

Why Should The Islanders Extend Clutterbuck?

Clutterbuck provides veteran leadership and physicality. While he is not a goal-scorer, other teams do not want to play against him. He is the type of player almost any team would want on their fourth line and he has shown that for over a decade.

The other reason is chemistry. Cizikas, Clutterbuck and Martin have played together for many years and have a special connection. Ross Johnston is a physical player, but the line will not be the same if he replaces Clutterbuck. Clutterbuck is a gritty enforcer who can change the momentum of the game each time he hits the ice.

What Could Clutterbuck’s Extension Look Like?

Although he is 34, Clutterbuck is not slowing down. If Clutterbuck is signed long-term like Cizikas and Martin, he could be extended for approximately $2 million per year over three or four years — a move the Islanders should make.
