Cade Borchardt Has His Eyes Set on National Championship

Cade Borchardt has been Minnesota State’s leading scorer throughout the season. His contributions on the ice have put Minnesota State in a promising position. Fine-tuning details and finishing out the regular season strong is crucial as Borchardt and Minnesota State look towards the playoffs.

“We have a tough schedule coming up,” Borchardt said. “Clearing everything up, sticking to the details, and finishing the regular season as strong as possible because there are no easy games in the playoffs and everyone’s going to be there for the battle.”

Minnesota State’s strong chemistry has allowed for personal and team success to grow. Building a strong connection was essential to creating a winning culture.

“We have a tight group, we are together all the time and there is no odd guy out. We don’t consider anyone as a freshman anymore we are all one and as the year has gone on we all just stuck together”

Cade Borchardt’s offense has helped Minnesota State night in and night out. Providing scoring in both the goals and assist column throughout the entirety of the season. Since Borchardt is the top scorer on the team, some offensive pressure falls on him.

“I try to create offense every night, it starts with defense and zone, that’s been one of my biggest things this year is working on the defensive side, working hard and good things will come.

Offense is only half of the game. The offensive game of Borchardt may be what he is known for; however, his improved defensive play is something that he is prideful of.

“I put a lot of time and effort off-ice to up my strength, but my defensive side of the game, blocking shots, and playing on the defensive side first has led to some offensive success. I take pride in playing a 200-foot game”

Borchardt (28) was recently named to the Hobey Baker Nominee List

Due to his dynamic offensive ability and improved defensive game, Borchardt is on the Hobey Baker nomination list. While an honor, Borchardt is not focused on the prospect of winning personal achievements.

“It’s a huge accomplishment individually, but I’m surrounded by good teammates and a good coaching staff,” Borchardt said. ‘ It’s an honor to be a part of that list but right now I’m worried about our team. We’ve got a few games left, so it’s more of a team thing right now”

Minnesota State has unfinished business from last year’s playoffs. Instead of using personal awards to motivate him, Borchardt has something else to motivate him.

“Winning it all,” Borchardt said. “I watch the national championship every year and being able to celebrate and be on top every season would be a dream come true.”
